 The picture shows
another use for a hurdle, Wilf has up-ended one to use as a shelter whilst
he makes thatching spars.  These long split hazel rods were used to peg
thatch onto a roof or a rick.  When thatch was more common and every farm
had ricks that needed thatching hundreds of thousands of spars were wanted
each year.

makers, notice the thatching spars in use pinning the thatch down firmly
onto the roof.
